We hope you enjoy living in this lovely village. We want everyone to feel part of the community from day one so in this leaflet you will find local information that you might find useful.
Well Parish Council meets four times a year in the Well Village Institute on Church Street, with an additional AGM in May. Details about dates of meetings, agendas and minutes are published on the parish council pages on the village website. Julia Hamby is the Parish Clerk and can be contacted at [email protected] Julia has a village email contact list and regularly sends out email information about a range of subjects and issues from Hambleton District Council, North Yorkshire County Council and others. Please contact Julia if you would like to be added to the contact list.
The village website can be found at www.wellvillage.org.uk. It contains pages of information about the history of the village and local groups, information about St. Michael’s Church and Parish Council agendas, minutes and news.
The village Facebook page will also keep you updated on what’s happening, when and where.
The Parish News magazine is free and delivered through your door on a bi-monthly basis. It contains information about events and groups in all the local villages: Masham, Snape, Well, North Stainley and West Tanfield.
The parish news is also in electronic form and you can access it from the front page of this website. You can also access the Mashamshire Community Newsletter, which is issued electronically every week and is one of the best ways of keeping up to date with all local information - events and activities and also roadworks, road closures etc.
Wonderful Well Community Group - set up in Autumn 2019 to bring the village together through a series of community events, starting with putting on the lights on the first village Christmas Tree at the crossroads, carol singing in the village, a village coffee morning, resurrecting the popular village Scarecrow Trail and many more. The Milbank Arms is our village pub. Dean and Jodie are the hosts and can be contacted on 01677 470411. Opening times are usually Wednesday to Saturday 12.00-14.00 then 18.00 – late. Food served until 21.00. Sunday 12.00-14.00 for food, closing at 16.00. Quiz night every Thursday at 20.30
The Post Office mobile van parks on the land on the corner of Bedale Road and Hollyhill Road every Tuesday from 12.30 – 13.00.
There is a village shop and post office in West Tanfield, 11/2 miles from Well.
The Church of St Michael the Archangel is the parish church. The Curate is Reverend Sian Lawton 01765 530715 /[email protected]. Details about services are posted on the noticeboard outside the church, and in the Parish News.
Newspapers – on a daily or weekly basis – can be ordered from Avril Lane on 01677 470573. The papers are delivered each day to the small hut at the crossroads next to Walnut House, for customers to collect.
Fresh eggs are also available from the small hut next to Walnut House near the crossroads.
Milkman: Steve Lofthouse can be contacted on 07793011300. Deliveries are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The village playing field is on Church Street, just beyond the church. The outdoor exercise equipment, installed recently, is for use by teenagers and adults. No dogs are allowed on the playing field.
Bus routes come through the village, and the bus stops are located at the crossroads. For up-to-date details of timetables, please look on proctorscoaches.com - Dales and District.
Waste and recycling bins are emptied on a Friday in Well. The rotas for the different types of collections, and any changes at bank holidays, can be found on the Hambleton District Council website. There is an annual charge for emptying garden waste bins.
Pennine Brewery
The local brewery is the Pennine Brewery, which is situated on the industrial estate next to Well Hall Farm
Local walks. There is a page dedicated to local walks in the area on the new village website, with clear directions and distances.
The Snape and Well Village Show takes place every August Bank Holiday Monday. This is held in the Village Institute at Snape and on the green. There are classes for Flowers, Vegetables, Home produce, Handicrafts and a wide Children’s section. During the day there are stalls and entertainment on the village green and exhibitions from the Snape History Group and Snape Textile Group.
